Searching

Click on the search button at the bottom of the Gateway Page. A search form page will load. Search for data by entering Keywords then pressing the Submit button.

  • Use the "*" character to expand searches, e.g. water* will find water, waterways, watersheds, etc.
  • Upper or Lower case letters not distinguished.
  • Only keyword 1 is required.

Query Results

No results?

  • Use only simplified general keywords.
  • Try searching "full text" only.
  • Instead of using phrased queries use single words. For example: Instead of searching "environmental indicators" search "environment" or "indicators."

Not find what you were looking for?

Try browsing the list (hyperlink to the list page). Find the title of the coverage you are interested in and use that title or like descriptive words to find similar coverages.

Too many results?

Try using the Boolean search terms to narrow your search. For example: Use "West Oakland" andnot "Fruitvale" to find information on just West Oakland and not Fruitvale.

Browsing Your Results

The records retrieved by your results are best reviewed by looking at the most descriptive parts, the picture, title and abstract. The title and picture are easy to find, but the abstract takes some searching. The abstract found by scrolling down through the metadata record or clicking on the subheading "Identification Heading." This will lead you to the abstract and other helpful descriptive elements of the metadata.
