Metadata Collector
Metadata, or data about data, is information that describes the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data.
The Metadata Collector is an ArcView extension developed at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center.
The NOAA Coastal Services Center's ArcView Metadata Collector is an easy-to-use software application that can be used by ArcView users without full understanding of FGDC "Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata." The Metadata Collector was designed to generate FGDC-compliant metadata for any data type supported by ArcView. This includes ArcInfo coverages and ArcView shapefiles, as well as any supported image types. The application/extension was created in ArcView using Avenue- the ArcView customization and development environment. The tool is considered intuitive in that it extracts, or knows to look for, information (metadata), including bounding coordinates, projection, and attributes. In addition, the tool stores information into tables that can be edited, if needed, and reused for subsequent metadata records.
